A huge thunder and lightning storm hit Nerja overnight, causing localised flooding and damage in the town. Málaga province is on Orange Alert until 2pm after a weekend of heavy rains caused chaos in the region, with roads closed, streets flooded and a mini-tornado was reported at Málaga airport.

Last night’s storm went on through the night with more than 54mm of rain falling (2 inches). The rainfall was at its heaviest at around 7am falling at a rate of 100mm (4 inches) an hour.

At Burriana the rivers down to the beach flooded washing away part of the promenade at the western end of the beach and damaging the footbridge. The beach itself has been washed away in places and there are piles of bamboo driftwood and rubbish at the waterline and out to sea.

In other parts of Nerja, drain covers have been blown off with the strength of the storm water and there are reports of some flooding in basements.

Light rain is forecast to continue until the evening, with dry weather returning for the rest of the week.

More photos will be added to this page during the day.
