Nerja Council are to debate a motion to ask the Environment Ministry permission to have sun loungers available for rent on El Cañuelo beach. El Cañuelo is one of the remote beaches between Nerja and Almunecar in the Maro-Cerro Gordo natural park.
Currently, other than a beach restaurant, there are no facilities on the beach. In the summer months there is a bus service down to the beach from the main road above, otherwise it is a long hot walk down the track. Hence the beach is one of the last unspoilt beaches on the Costa del Sol.
In addition to the loungers, the council would like to provide walkways and railings to protect the more vulnerable areas surrounding the beach. The Environment Councillor for Nerja, Nieves Atencia, highlighted “the important role the beaches play in the economic development of our town, being at the forefront of our tourist attractions” adding that the beach of El Cañuelo “should be properly equipped to provide quality service to users and at the same time accomplish the goal of minimising the impact generated by them.”.
When proposals were made public to develop El Playazo beach to the west of Nerja, MyNerja.com readers voted by a large majority against any such developments in our opinion poll on the subject.
