The tunnel on the A7 motorway between Nerja and Torrox will be closed to traffic on Wednesday 28th of November 2012 in order to stage an exercise for the emergency services. Traffic will be diverted by the police along the N340 instead between 9am and 1pm approximately.
A simulated traffic accident will be staged consisting of a collision and resulting fire between three vehicles inside the tunnel. Numerous agencies will take part in the exercise including the Guardia Civil, 112 Emergency Coordination Service, Ambulance Service, Fire Service and the Nerja and Torrox Local Police.
The Nerja Councillor for Civil Protection and Fire, Inocencia Quintero, said that the aim of this drill is to test the coordination and reaction of the different services involved in an emergency situation and noted that although the simulation will cause some inconvenience to drivers “at the end it will benefit everyone.” The month of November was chosen for the exercise due to the low traffic volumes on the motorway.
