Only two months later than scheduled and just in time for Christmas, Nerja Ayuntamiento has begun work on the pedestrianisation of Calle El Barrio (which runs from Plaza Cavana over to Calle Antonio Millon).
The total cost of the project is budgeted at around €600,000 and includes the replacement of the underground water and sewage pipes. The work will be completed in two stages, the first from Plaza Cavana to Cafe El Barrio and the second from Cafe El Barrio onwards.
Whilst the work is underway, pedestrians are advised to use Calle Diputacion (the next street up from El Barrio) to avoid the roadworks. One passerby has already fallen into the excavations and had to be rescued by the workmen.
The road will be paved with red and grey marble paving blocks and the work is estimated to take no more than four months. The project is part of the councils plan to have a pedestrianised route all the way from the western end of Burriana beach to the car park/riverside path at Chaparil.
