Nerja council has been looking into the possibility of creating an artificial “reef” off the coast of Nerja, by sinking two wooden boats, to provide an additional habitat for underwater sea life. The council will ask the regional council in Seville to support the project and provide the necessary licenses.

The boats would be sunk off the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs and it is hoped that the project would lead to an increase in the fish population and also attract amateur divers to the sites.

It is claimed that the seabed has deteriorated over the past few years, with a reduction in the amount of sea life found in the natural park area. This is due in part to pollution and rising sea water temperatures.
