Average day time temperatures in January are around 17ºC, although it can feel much warmer in the sun and chilly out of it. As ever, there will be people sunbathing year round on the more sheltered spots on the beaches, especially at the western end of Torrecilla beach, which is a sun trap. Out of the sun, in the shade and especially if it is windy, it can feel cold. Holidaymakers can be seen during the day in shorts and t-shirts, but as soon as the sun goes in they head back to their hotels and apartments to change into jeans and jumpers – so don’t go out just before sunset dressed for the beach.
This year (2013) January managed to achieve a maximum temperature of 21.8ºC on the 26th, with a lowest temperature of 9.3ºC at 4am on the 23rd. At this time of year, cold northerly winds can really drop the temperatures, and even though the sun is shining, it can be cold in the wind and very chilly in the mornings. Don’t go out dressed for the beach just because the sun is shining.
When the wind changes, it can bring spring like conditions with it , with settled periods for days at a time. As it is winter, there can also be rain. This year (2013) there were several days of rain, with heavy rainfall at times, so bring a waterproof with you.
The ski slopes at the Sierra Nevadas will also be open at this time of year, so make sure you bring suitable clothing with you if you want to see the snow, as well as your beach stuff for Nerja.
