Nerja’s Protección Civil have warned that due to stormy weather conditions forecast for Thursday 29th of August 2013 hikers are recommended to avoid walking up the Rio Chillar. According to Spain’s Emergency Co-ordination Centre, there is a yellow alert from 10am until midnight.

Local police and members of the Proteccion Civil will be in place at the entrance to the rio Chillar walk to warn hikers of the forecast storm conditions and the risk of flooding. If the alert changes from yellow to red the access to the river will be closed.

According to the Spanish meteorological office, rainfall of up to 25 litres an hour are forecast.

In September 2012 heavy rain caused damage throughout the region and left 10 people dead. Nerja escaped the worst of the storms, but damage was still caused around the town and beaches. Pictures here.
