Today, Friday 26th of April 2013, is Dia de la Provincia (Day of the Province of Malaga) which is being held this year in Casares, a small whitewashed village in the hills inland from Estepona. Casares is the birthplace of Blas Infante an Andalucian politician, writer, historian and musicologist, known as the father of Andalucian nationalism who was murdered by Franco’s forces during the Spanish civil war.

Various ceremonies will take place today in Casares to mark the event and Baroness Thyssen will be awarded a gold medal for her contribution to culture and arts in the province. Gold medals will also be awarded to the charity CUDECA and to the Malaga Business Confederation.

Last year it was Nerja’s turn to host the event and the Balcon de Europa and Plaza España were decked out with flags to celebrate all 101 villages in Málaga province. Dia de la Provincia was first held in 2004 in Antequera and has been held every year since then in different towns around the region.
