The groundwork has got underway at the site of the new car park for Burriana beach. This preparatory work consists of clearing the site, increasing its size and also moving a drain. Nerja’s councillor for Infrastructure Antonio García has stated that the work will be suspended during the summer months, during the height of the tourist season and the site will be used as a temporary car park during that time (see map).
The car park will be on three levels and have capacity for some 200 cars. The total cost of the project will be 2.7 million Euros and is expected to take 18 months to complete. Finance for the project will come from the state fund for the modernisation of tourism infrastructures (FOMIT). The site for the new structure is currently an empty parcel of land, which is used for parking in the summer months, just off one of the access roads to Burriana and a few minutes walk to the beach.
The new car park will be the fourth public car park to be built in Nerja, the others being the underground car parks at the Balcon de Europa, with 733 spaces, Verano Azul park with 273 spaces and the public pool car park, with 70 spaces. There is also the privately owned car park at Los Huertos.
