A huge forest fire towards the western end of Malaga province, has caused thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes and hotels and has burnt around 1,000 hectares of land in the area between Coin and Marbella. Despite the size of the fire, only two people have been injured.

The fire started on Thursday afternoon, and quickly spread over a 12km long area, forcing the evacuation of residential neighbourhoods in its path. The southern side of the fire is under control (betwen Mijas and Marbella) however strong winds are fanning the flames on the Ojén, Monda and Coín side to the north.

Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to the area, including 30 firefighting aircraft.

The affected area is around 90km to the west of Nerja (the other side of Malaga city).
