On Friday the 17th and Friday the 24th of August there will be a screening of some of Danish resident Ib Stenderup’s Super 8 films of Maro and its surroundings, dating back to the 1960s.

The screenings, organized by the Culture department of Nerja council, will take place from ten pm in the main square in Maro. The films will be screened with music selected by Ib Stenderup to accompany the footage.

Ib Stenderup arrived in Maro from Denmark in the early 60’s and used his Super 8 camera to document all the events that took place in the town and its surroundings, such as the cutting of sugar cane, festivals and the arrival of mail in the town.

In 2006, after his death, his widow, Grit María Stenderup, expressed in a letter to the then mayor of Maro, Antonio Gallardo, her desire to donate all her husband’s film work to the town. She also stated her “deep gratitude for all that Maro has done for my husband and our family for many years”.

These screenings of this unique record of the recent history of Maro is sure to be of great interest to locals and visitors alike.
