The mayor of Nerja, José Alberto Armijo (pictured) has announced that the future of El Playazo beach will be debated at the next full council session. El Playazo is currently the last undeveloped stretch of beach in Nerja and the draft plan for its urbanisation will be voted on by the town’s councillors.
According to the mayor, the draft plan will have “important consequences from the point of view of tourism and above all the economy of Nerja.”.
The new plan envisages reclassifying over a million square metres of land between the beach and the main road behind as “urbanisable”. This will allow the development of hotels, houses, leisure and “green” areas. Parque Verano Azul, on the east side of the Rio Chillar, will be enlarged and have three pedestrian accesses from calle Chaparil.
The N340 main road will become a “grand tree lined avenue” with access roads to the new development, which could consist of more than 2,000 new homes.
The existing businesses on the beach face an uncertain future having been fined and threatened with closure in the past few months.
