Nerja Council And Local Businesses To Promote Christmas Trade

Latest News Thursday 22nd of November 2012

With the Christmas holiday season just around the corner, Nerja council have held a meeting with local businesses to consider ways to boost trade during the holiday period.

Measures discussed included putting up Christmas decorations on the outside of shops, holding competitions and putting up banners. Traders also raised the idea of having permission to place stalls outside their premises on Thursdays with their products on sale at specially reduced prices.

The meeting also discussed holding another Outlet Fair (Feria de Oportunidades) the first of which was held in February this year. Despite the success of the fair, the organisers have had to postpone the second fair, which was due to be held in September. In August the regional government, the Junta de Andalucia, fined the organisers of the fair €3,000 for illegal trading. The Junta claimed that the fair contravened the Andalucian Trading Act, which prohibits shops larger than 300 square metres in size from opening on a Sunday. Although the individual stalls were smaller than this size, the marquee that the event was held in was bigger than 300m2, hence the justification for the fine.
